Ashghal Upgraded Roads, Utilities Surrounding Several Sports Halls ahead of Qatar 2015

The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has completed upgrading works on the roads and utilities network surrounding a number of sports halls due to host the 24th Handball World Championship, held in Qatar between the 15th of January and the 1st of February 2015.

The development works included the roads and utilities surrounding Lusail Multipurpose Hall, Al Sadd Sports Club, Lekhwiya and Qatar Clubs. Streets surrounding Al Sadd Club in addition to the entrances and exits leading to the sports hall in Al Sadd have been paved. Lighting and signage has also been installed and pedestrian paths were built in addition to building a temporary parking lot with a capacity of 2400 cars. Streets leading to Lekhwiya Club and the sports hall were also paved and Qatar Club’s temporary parking lot was expanded.

In Lusail, new roads were built to improve traffic flow and safety standards in the roads leading to each of the Multipurpose Hall, Lusail International Circuit and Lusail Shooting Club. The length of the new and improved roads extend to a total of 6.5 km and two lanes wide in each direction.

Six traffic lights have been installed at the intersections surrounding the Multipurpose Hall which is expected to have a dense traffic movement around during the Handball World Championship. The new signals will improve traffic flow and safety in the area.

Permanent parking lots with a capacity of 4500 cars have been built on the north and west sides of Lusail Multipurpose Hall with work including grading (excavation and backfilling); laying paving; and drawing parking lot lines and installing of drainage pipes.

Additionally, Ashghal has connected the roads surrounding Lusail Multipurpose Hall with Al Khor Coastal Road, increasing traffic flow and safety and providing a way to and from the Multipurpose Hall and the Sports Complex through the Temporary Truck Route that was completed and opened to traffic recently.

In the meantime, Ashghal also announced that traffic diversions will be in place on the entrances and exits leading to the service road west of Al Shamal road in the Umm Slal Ali area from the morning of 9 January 2015 until Q3, 2015. The entrance and exit to the service road leading to Al Sakhama Interchange will be closed. In addition a stretch of service road connecting Al Sakhama and Umm al Amad interchanges will also be closed. Traffic will be diverted to secondary roads that will allow vehicles access to the service and local roads.

This diversion aims to facilitate the design and construction of a new two-lane service road as part of the project undertaken by the Public Works Authority to improve Al Shamal Road.
