City Center Almaza (CCA), one of the biggest retail malls in Egypt, had received LEED-Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), denoting proficiency in sustainable design, construction and operation standards. Hassan Allam Construction/Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC) joint venture completed the construction and LEED certification process of the project, for the developer Majid Al Futtaim (MAF)
In a statement made on Hassan Allam Holding’s official LinkedIn page: “The project’s true success, lies in the fact that it is constructed with sustainable best practices in mind. We have been conscious to bring on board more than 100 local subcontractors and utilize as much local raw material as possible, in an effort to reduce the environmental impact of transporting construction material. HAC has worked relentlessly to ensure the site’s surrounding area remained unharmed throughout the project’s lifespan by reducing material waste, recycling materials, and establishing noise and dust control.”
According to the CCC, the usage of sustainable strategies helped the project achieve:
- 14.6% energy savings with the use of energy efficient equipment and renewable energy.
- 89% waste recycling via a detailed waste management program.
- 47% reduction of water-use through low flow fixtures and wastewater management.
- 4.7% offset of total energy consumed by utilizing renewable energy generated on-site.
- Procuring and using environmentally preferable materials: 30.9% of the total building materials were manufactured using recycled materials and 48.5% were sourced locally.
The LEED-Gold seal awarded to City Centre Almaza, is the latest addition to CCC’s list of Green Building projects including the Abu Dhabi International Airport Midfield Terminal Building, two Doha Metro stations and the Palestinian Museum.
