The main theme of the webinar revolves around how contractors are dealing with COVID-19 pandemic from a legal point of view. COVID-19 has disrupted almost every industry and with projects being delayed due to a variety of reasons due to COVID-19, how do current contracts give reprieve to contractors and what may future contracts look like to ensure that contractors are protected in the future. Also we’ll discuss issues such as force majeure, what legal challenges construction companies would face during the COVID-19 pandemic, and much more

  1. Joanne Strain, Partner at international law firm King & Wood Mallesons Dubai

Joanne Strain is an English law qualified solicitor with a particular focus on international commercial arbitration and DIFC litigation, specialising in disputes with a significant cross-border element. With over 14 years of high-value complex dispute resolution experience, Joanne has extensive expertise in the construction sector, acting for multiple high profile owners and developers in the Middle East market, with further particular expertise in disputes concerning fraud and anti-corruption.

Joanne also advises clients on a diverse range of financial and commercial disputes, compliance with international sanctions and anti-corruption legislation, and sits as an arbitrator under LCIA, ICC, DIAC and DIFC-LCIA Rules.

 

2. Andrew Mackenzie, Partner at Baker McKenzie Habib Al Mulla

Andrew handles a wide range of commercial and financial disputes and has a particular specialty in financial services, construction and energy disputes, as well as advising clients on IP and insurance matters. Andrew has tried cases in all of the major arbitration forums including ICSID, ICC, LCIA, DIFC-LCIA, SIAC, UNCITRAL, ADCCAC and DIAC. He also holds full rights of audience before the DIFC and ADGM Courts, sits as an arbitrator and has written and presented at numerous international conferences on arbitration, commercial litigation and dispute resolution more broadly.

He works extensively across the Middle East, Africa and Asia, acting for governments and international corporations on complex commercial disputes under a variety of civil and common law systems. He is ranked in Chambers Global, Legal 500 and is listed in Who’s Who Legal as one of the world’s leading dispute lawyers.

 

 

3. Gurmeet Kaur, Partner at Pinsent Masons

Gurmeet has 20 years’ experience in legal practice and has practiced law in the Middle East region since 2007. She has advised public and private clients on infrastructure and energy projects with a particular focus on renewable energy, water and power projects. Gurmeet joined the board of the Middle East Solar Industry Association (MESIA) in 2017.
