Qatar to Host 19th Meeting of GCC Environment Ministers

The state of Qatar has taken part in the 18th session of ministers in charge of environment in GCC countries, held recently in Kuwait. HE the Minister of Environment Ahmed bin Amir Al-Hemaidi led Qatar’s delegation to the meeting.

Addressing the meeting’s closing session, HE Al-Hemaidi invited the minister to attend the next meeting in the State of Qatar. He expressed thanks to the State of Kuwait for chairing the meeting and for the worm hospitality accorded to participants.

The meeting discussed a host of issues including cooperation with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the regional office for West Asia, the Regional Organization for the Protection of the Marine Environment (ROPME) as well as cooperation with Turkey, Jordan and Morocco in the environment field.

The ministers also discussed a draft Gulf environmental e-portal which will contribute to the presentation of data and dissemination of environmental knowledge to the international community and the proposed GCC network on land degradation studies and the Award of Sultan Qaboos for Human Affairs and Environmental Sector.

The minister were also briefed on developments with regard to the GCC award for the environment and wildlife, preparation for the GCC framework convention on the protection of the environment and the memorandum referred by the standing committee of the conservation of wildlife and natural habitats on the creation of an environmental police force or a similar body in the Gulf states, and took the appropriate recommendation thereon.

The State of Qatar chaired the 43rd meeting of GCC undersecretaries responsible for environmental affairs, held on the 23rd of this month in Kuwait in to prepare for the meeting of GCC minsters in charge of environment.
