Recommendations coming out of the forum being held here on telecommunications organized by Kuwait and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) will help develop this sector in the country, said a Kuwaiti official on Tuesday.
In a speech opening the forum, Ministry of Communication undersecretary Habib Al-Qattan said the ministry was keen on developing its services through the use of international standards and protocols promoted by ITU.
He said later on the sideline of the forum that Kuwait’s membership in the ITU gave it space to train Kuwaitis in the telecom field to serve the needs of the public by both the private and public sectors.
Regarding improving mail services in the country, he said there were plans to keep the post office in the hands of the government and not the private sector for the time being.
The ITU Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) is one of the three sectors (divisions or units) of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU); it coordinates standards for telecommunications.
The standardization work of ITU dates back to 1865, and became a United Nations specialized agency in 1947.
ITU-T has a permanent secretariat, the Telecommunication Standardization Bureau (TSB), based at the ITU HQ in Geneva, Switzerland. The elected Director of the Bureau is Malcolm Johnson of the UK.
He spoke at today’s forum saying that ITU-T offered valuable services to its member countries, including Kuwait, and noting the importance of creating partnerships between the private and public sectors in the field of telecommunication services.
