Qatar Petrochemical Company (QAPCO) has launched its 2014 summer internship program welcoming 70 summer trainees from local and international universities for an eight-week program, during which they will gain exposure and industry knowledge.
The program starts with a three-day induction course designed to introduce the students to QAPCO and included health and safety training, orientation of the plant and the issuing of personal protective equipment. It also includes a workshop on time management to assist the students with their upcoming working schedule for the next two months, the company said in a press release issued Monday.
“The QAPCO internship program is a pathway to a successful career in the industry and I believe that all aspiring engineers should, at some stage of their education, experience the thrill of working in an industrial plant and witness for themselves the processes, applications and technology that they study in academia,” QAPCO’s Vice Chairman and CEO Dr. Mohammed Yousef Al Mulla said.
Demand for QAPCO internships has never been stronger as the petrochemical industry is booming in the Middle East, which was highlighted in the large number of internship applications the company received from candidates in Qatar and abroad. The Qatari petrochemical sector is well-known for its technical know-how and high level of expertise. QAPCO offers unique and stimulating summer internship positions focusing in particular on scientific disciplines, such as mechanical, electrical and chemical engineering.
“I am pleased to once again open the doors of QAPCO to allow undergraduate students to experience what they have learned in university and develop further the theories and models they have studied. This part of their development is vital as they will acquire firsthand knowledge of the petrochemical industry and will be trained by subject matter experts who have more than 20 years [of] experience of working in [the] industry. This type of learning cannot be achieved in classrooms or lecture halls and will be of great benefit to all the students. It may also encourage some of the engineering students to join the new QAPCO apprenticeship program once they have completed their degree,” Eng. Abdulla Ahmad Naji, QAPCO’s learning and development manager said.
QAPCO’s Internship program emphasizes both practical and educational aspects of working in the petrochemical industry and is proud to offer both Qatari and expatriate students learning opportunities that will help prepare them for the growing prospects in the oil and gas industry in Qatar and around the world.
