Katara Hospitality (KH) has won a certification in recognition for its environmentally sustainable practices, the global hotel developer and operator said Sunday.
The International Sustainability and Carbon Certification System (ISCC EU) awarded the certification to KH for reducing its organizational carbon footprint by recycling cooking oil to produce renewable energy.
KH hotels in Qatar including Sharq Village & Spa, a Ritz Carlton Hotel, Somerset West Bay Doha, Movenpick Hotel Doha and Sheraton Doha Resort and Convention Hotel recycle used cooking oil for biofuel production in a process approved by the European Commission.
This practice is recognized by the ISCC as one that contributes to reduced greenhouse gas emissions, protection of natural biospheres, sustainable land use and social responsibility.
KH works closely with GBO, the only ISCC certified company in Qatar approved to collect and recycle oil safely according to ‘Green Restaurants’ standards.
The production of renewable energy is high on the agenda for many hospitality organizations embarking on socially responsible initiatives.
KH Chief Executive Officer Hamad Abdulla Al Mulla said, “As human activity increases across the globe, it is the duty of every citizen and organization to employ initiatives that reduce the impact of GHG emissions.
“We are honoured to be awarded this certification as it symbolizes our continued commitment to reducing the impacts of global warming and our corporate efforts towards environmental preservation.” KH has an integrated approach to corporate social responsibility, with special focus on environmental issues and sustainable development in the tourism sector, the hotel operator said.
