HE Minister of Energy and Industry Opens South Hook Offices in London

HE Minister of Energy and Industry Dr Mohammed bin Saleh Al-Sada concluded a working visit to the United Kingdom, where he inaugurated the new offices of South Hook Gas and South Hook LNG Terminal in London.

HE the Minister of Energy and Industry met Pat Rabbitte, Minister of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources in the Republic of Ireland, where they discussed the prospects of cooperation in energy field and means to develop such cooperation, in addition to a number of issues of common interest.

HE Al-Sada also met today UK Minister of State for Energy & Climate Change Michael Fallon and discussed with him a number of issues related to the cooperation between the two countries in energy domains and ways of enhancing them, in addition to discussing the development in a number of issues that were discussed during Fallon’s visit to Doha last November.

They also discussed issued related to the natural gas sector, investment in energy, climate change, and renewable energy.
The meeting was attended by HE Qatar’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom Khalid bin Rashid Al Mansouri and members of the Qatari delegation, which includes a number of senior officials from Qatar Petroleum, Qatar Petroleum International, and Qatargas.

HE the Minister of Energy and Industry’s meeting with Fallon was held on the sidelines of the inauguration of the new offices in London’s iconic Shard building, held under the patronage of HE Dr. Mohammed bin Saleh Al-Sada, in the presence of Michael Fallon, UK Minister of State for Energy & Climate Change and Jimmy Deenihan, Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht in the Republic of Ireland.

In a speech marking the occasion, HE Dr Al-Sada hailed “the great relations between the State of Qatar and the United Kingdom, nurtured and developed under the leaderships of HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II”. He said “our historic relations extend to every aspect of life in both our countries, and are a true model of promoting cooperation, mutual understanding, and the appreciation of cultures, traditions, and people.” Dr Al-Sada noted that South Hook Gas was happy to be one of the contributors to the UK’s energy security. “In just five years, South Hook Gas has grown rapidly to become the largest LNG importer in the UK, and one of the largest in Europe.

It is a reliable energy partner that is capable of meeting up to one fifth of total UK demand.” Qatar’s Minister of Energy and Industry congratulated the team at South Hook LNG Terminal for a fantastic job in managing a safe and efficient facility, and for transforming it into an important part of the UK’s gas infrastructure.

Established in 2004, SHG is a joint venture between Qatar Petroleum International (70 per cent) and ExxonMobil (30 per cent).
South Hook LNG Terminal is one of Europe’s largest Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), regasification facilities. It has the processing capacity of 15.6 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) and is capable of delivering up to 21 billion cubic metres (bcm) per annum of gas into the National Transmission System (NTS) – equivalent to around 20% of current UK gas needs.
