Riyadh is preparing to become a global hub for mining innovation

Riyadh is set to host the in-person bootcamp for the inaugural Global Minerals Innovation Competition, titled “Future Minerals Pioneers.” The event is held under the patronage of the Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources, Bandar Alkhorayef, and led by Vice Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources for Mining Affairs Engineer Khalid bin Saleh Al-Mudaifer. Organized by the National Industrial Development and Logistics Program (NIDLP) in partnership with the ministry and Saudi Arabian Mining Company (Maaden), the initiative aims to empower the mining sector as a strategic pillar of Saudi Vision 2030.
The in-person bootcamp will take place from January 8 to 10, 2026, bringing together qualified teams from Saudi Arabia and over 30 nationalities.

This event marks the final stage of a journey that began last October with a comprehensive national tour. Sponsored by the Saudi Mining Services Company “ESNAD”, that initial phase covered every region of the Kingdom to identify the top talent now advancing to this global competition. The final stage will be the awarding ceremony to announce the winners and honoring the partners during the fifth edition of the Future Minerals Forum on January 14, 2026.

The competition arrives as the Kingdom’s mining sector undergoes an unprecedented transformation. Supported by a strategic vision and an attractive regulatory environment, Saudi Arabia has secured a premier position in global rankings.

According to the 2024 Fraser Institute report, the Kingdom achieved one of the decade’s largest leaps, climbing from 104th to 23rd in the Mining Investment Attractiveness Index. This growth is mirrored across other key metrics: the Policy Perceptions Index rose from 82nd to 20th, while the Geological Potential Index jumped from 58th to 24th. These gains reflect surging global confidence in the future of Saudi mining.

These indicators support national efforts to maximize Saudi Arabia’s mineral wealth, currently estimated at SAR9.4 trillion. This growth is driven by the general program for geological surveyin, which is building a comprehensive resource database.

To date, 65 percent of the first phase has been completed across the Arabian Shield, an area covering 630,000 square kilometers. By providing accurate and reliable data, the program aims to stimulate investment and enhance the sector’s global competitiveness.

The Future Minerals Pioneers competition includes three main tracks: smart technologies, security and safety, and resource sustainability, through which it seeks to develop practical solutions to the challenges in the mining value chain, and enable national and global talents to contribute to building an integrated innovation ecosystem that supports the sector’s sustainability and growth.

Since its launch, the competition has attracted wide participation, with 1,812 applicants forming 371 teams from 57 countries. A total of 356 participants representing 70 teams qualified for the final stage, 68 percent of whom were from within the Kingdom and 32 percent from abroad, reflecting growing international interest alongside strong local momentum.

The in-person bootcamp provides an intensive working environment combining awareness workshops, mentoring sessions, and solution development. This contributes to enhancing the readiness of participating teams prior to their final presentations to the judging panels, ending in the crowning of the winners at the Future Minerals Forum.
