The Transport General Authority (TGA) is expanding its autonomous vehicle initiative in Riyadh, reflecting Saudi Arabia’s commitment to innovation and sustainability under Vision 2030

The Transport General Authority (TGA) has announced the continued operation and expansion of its autonomous vehicle service in Riyadh, launched in partnership with Uber and WeRide. The initiative, part of the authority’s initial application phase, has drawn growing public interest and marks a key milestone in Saudi Arabia’s transition toward smart and sustainable mobility.

Since the service’s debut, more than 950 passengers have experienced the autonomous transport offering. The vehicles currently operate across two designated routes — within Roshn Front and Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University — each featuring multiple dedicated stations to facilitate convenient pick-up and drop-off for passengers.

The pilot program operates under direct regulatory and technical supervision from TGA, with trained safety officers present in each vehicle to ensure the highest safety standards. These officers monitor the performance of the vehicles’ smart driving systems in real-world conditions, ensuring compliance with international benchmarks for autonomous mobility.

According to the TGA, the initiative represents one of its strategic projects to develop advanced, environmentally friendly transport technologies in line with the National Transport and Logistics Strategy and the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.

Operational plans are already underway to expand the service across additional routes and key destinations in Riyadh. The authority aims to increase the fleet to more than 20 autonomous vehicles by the end of this year, with the support of partner government entities including the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), the General Authority for Survey and Geospatial Information, and the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO).

The TGA emphasized that the project reflects its commitment to building a modern, technology-driven transport ecosystem that enhances safety, efficiency, and sustainability. Members of the public are invited to experience the service firsthand by booking an autonomous vehicle through the Uber app, offering a glimpse into the future of transport in the Kingdom.
