The Abu Abu Dhabi City Municipality has recently opened a new intersection at the extension of Al Falah Street nearby the buildings of the Municipality and the Ministry of Economy as part of a series of projects aimed at improving and upgrading roads, bridges and signalized junctions in order to nurture a modern and safe environment capable of accommodating all aspects of the current development drive, rising urban growth rates and mega existing and future investment projects in the capital city Abu Dhabi.

The new intersection, which is situated between two main intersections (Sheikh Zayed Street–Al Falah Street, Al Falah Street-Sheikh Fatima bint Mubarak Street) will streamline and improve the traffic efficiency, enhance the network link, and ease the access to and from the Sheikh Zayed Road to that area which houses several government departments and http://www.staging.businesstoday.me/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/sample10.jpgistrative offices and witnesses high traffic intensity.

The project includes revamping of the entire street where one lane is added to provide a U-Turn to serve motorists heading towards the Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Street, and light signals have been fitted in both directions. It also includes adding acceleration and slow-down lanes from and to the vertical street at the intersection, re-dotting street markings, introducing humps and pedestrian crossing lines to improve traffic safety such that all lanes will be more visible to users, improving the efficiency of the existing lighting poles by fitting them with LED bulbs, and installing necessary traffic and directional signals.

The project is intended to achieve a number of objectives highlighted by an improving the traffic flow, enhancing the capacity to handle traffic volumes coming from Sheikh Zayed Tunnel and Street heading towards Al Falah Street and Fatima bint Mubarak Street, easing the vehicular movement from and to downtown area in the direct of the Sheikh Zayed Street, and adding a U-Turn lane as well as acceleration and slow-down lanes in the opposite direction in order to improve the traffic safety standards. The project also serves vehicles from and to Abu Dhabi Island up to the downtown and Cornich area, upgrading infrastructure services of Al Falah Street and linking them to the Sheikh Zayed Street, improving the performance of the street and networks, and raising traffic safety levels of pedestrians and vehicles through providing a number of directional signs to step up the safety of pedestrians in the signalized junction.

The project brings about a host of benefits in terms of easing the traffic flow of vehicles coming from outside Abu Dhabi Island through the Sheikh Zayed Street and Tunnel heading towards the downtown area, and streamlining the traffic flow which translates into slashing the trip time via Al Falah Street and the Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Street. The intersection is fitted with modern services such as environment-friendly and power-saving lighting system that has long durability with minimal maintenance requirements, besides curbing carbon dioxide emissions. The system offers the possibility to control lighting intensity and adjusting it when needed, and has been linked to the power supply system; which provides power feed to automated systems and lights during emergency cases. The intersection is also fitted with modern traffic systems as well as control and monitoring systems.

During the engineering and design phases, the Municipality addressed a number of design and engineering requirements to bring about improvements at the intersection in cooperation with the Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council, and the Department of Transport so as to ensure that the design is compatible with the design standards as well as the local and international design specifications such as the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), the Abu Dhabi Urban Street Design Manual (USDM), and the Roads, Tunnels and Bridges Design System. In the same context, the Abu Dhabi City Municipality has set up a technological specialist traffic safety team to map out general strategies of traffic safety and sustained improvement.

The smart traffic safety features of the project include reducing the number of traffic accidents sustained by road users through using the latest intelligent traffic systems.
