Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has started working in early June to renovate the sewerage network in inner Doha, specifically in Najma area, a project that is set to be completed in the fourth quarter of next year, Ashghal said in a press release issues Tuesday.

The renovation work comes as Najma has seen a significant increase in population that required rehabilitation and expansion of all current sewer facilities and replacing them with a higher capacity network that will be sufficient for all sewerage flows for the next 50 years.

The short term goal of the project is to find a permanent solution for the sewerage water overflow and accommodate the increase in population in Najma. The old sewerage network, which was built earlier to meet the requirements of a limited number of residents, is not sufficient for the current flows.

The long-term goal of the project is to renovate the sewerage network in the southern areas of Doha where the population has reached close to one million. The project will support the economic and social development in these areas through increasing the capacity of the current networks, developing them and connecting them to more efficient, environment friendly pump stations with fewer emissions.

As part of the project, all old sewerage pipelines measuring 150 to 400 mm in diameter will be removed and replaced with new pipelines with a higher capacity between 200 and 1200 mm, which will improve the sewerage network efficiency in the area and subsequently lead to controlling the environmental dangers caused by sewerage overflow.

In addition to improving the social life of residents, the project will considerably contribute to sustaining the environment, Ashghal said in the press release.
The project is located in southern Doha bordered by B-Ring Road in the north, C-Ring Road in the south, Al Matar Street in the east and Najma Street in the west. Works will include replacement of 20 km of pipelines and approximately 500 sewer access manholes that allow access to the sewerage pipelines for maintenance works.
