Dubai Metro is celebrating its 15th anniversary, marking a significant milestone in transforming the city’s mass urban transit. A symbol of Dubai’s innovation, the metro has become a vital link across the city, offering reliable and sustainable transport for residents and visitors. Since its launch on September 9, 2009, the metro has expanded to keep pace with Dubai’s rapid growth, playing a crucial role in shaping the city into a global hub for business and tourism.

Over the past 15 years, Dubai Metro has seen consistent growth, with ridership reaching approximately 2.4 billion passengers. It has been essential in meeting the demands of Dubai’s growing population, achieving remarkable success in operational efficiency, punctuality, and safety.

With an average daily ridership of 730,000 passengers, Dubai Metro is now the preferred mode of transportation for many. The system boasts a 99.7% punctuality rate, maintaining high standards of safety and efficiency. Since its inception, the metro has facilitated 4.3 million journeys, covering 26.8 million kilometers.

His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the RTA, praised the Dubai Metro as one of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s visionary projects. The metro serves as the backbone of Dubai’s public transport, ensuring safe and smooth travel across the emirate. Al Tayer also highlighted the continuous support from Dubai’s leadership and the metro’s contribution to the city’s global competitiveness.

The Dubai Metro has expanded significantly since its launch, growing from 52 to 90 kilometers in length and increasing from 10 to 53 stations. It has created job opportunities for Emirati nationals and remains the world’s longest driverless metro project. The system continues to uphold its global reputation for safety and operational efficiency, contributing to Dubai’s green economy.

Al Tayer expressed satisfaction with the metro’s consistent growth, demonstrating the success of Dubai’s substantial investments in public transportation infrastructure. The metro has supported the city’s development, reduced traffic congestion, and encouraged a shift towards public transport, enhancing the quality of life in Dubai.

The Dubai Metro has shown continuous growth in ridership, from 6.089 million passengers in its first four months to a record 225.142 million riders in 2022. The metro continues to be a cornerstone of Dubai’s public transport system, contributing to the city’s economic and environmental goals.

In 2020, the Route 2020 project extended the metro’s Red Line to the Expo 2020 site, adding seven new stations and serving densely populated areas. The upcoming Blue Line, approved in 2023, will further expand the network, connecting 14 stations and serving key areas with an expected population of one million. The Blue Line will enhance connectivity and integration with the existing metro lines, supporting Dubai’s vision of becoming the best city in the world by 2040.

The Rail Operations Control Centre, one of the world’s most advanced, manages Dubai Metro’s daily operations with precision, ensuring the highest standards of safety and efficiency. The centre oversees train movements, system performance, and passenger information, contributing to the metro’s outstanding operational accuracy.
