Arshad Nadeem, a javelin thrower, made history today by securing Pakistan’s first gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, ending the country’s 32-year Olympic medal drought.
Nadeem achieved a remarkable throw of 92.97 metres in his second attempt during the men’s javelin throw final, setting a new Olympic record. The previous record was set by Andreas Thorkildsen of Norway at the 2008 Beijing Olympics with a throw of 90.57 metres, the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) reported.
This victory marks Pakistan’s first Olympic gold since their national hockey team’s triumph in 1992.
Nadeem, who hails from the small town of Mian Channu in Punjab, has overcome challenges with limited resources and training facilities to become one of the world’s top javelin throwers. His journey to Olympic glory exemplifies grit, determination, and hard work.
“Winning a gold medal is a dream come true, not just for me, but for every Pakistani,” said Nadeem in a post-event interview. “I hope this victory inspires the youth of our country to aim high and believe in their potential.”
