In line with the Applied Stream Work Placement Programme implemented by and in association with the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Education, Emrill has launched Khibra, a work placement programme for Emirati students.

In December 2019, Emrill invited five Emirati students to attend an intensive five-day programme, which introduced them to the UAE’s facilities management sector and Emrill’s business. During the programme, students were given the opportunity to accompany Emrill employees on site visits and observe mechanical and electrical work. Students completed a learner’s portfolio to evidence their learning.

Stuart Harrison, Emrill’s CEO, explained the importance of the programme: “We are proud to support UAE Vision 2021 and play an active role in building a diversified and knowledge-based economy powered by skilled Emiratis. Khibra means ‘deep knowledge’ or ‘to get experience’, and Emrill’s programme has been designed to develop the skills and knowledge required for the UAE’s growth sectors through applied learning. It was an honour to host this superb group of Emirati students, offer career advice and guidance and introduce them to the world of work.”

Students at Emrill focused on two applied stream curriculum pathways: applied electrical engineering maintenance and applied mechanical engineering maintenance. During the five-day programme, students visited three sites managed by Emrill to observe staff rectifying issues and carrying out preventative maintenance work. Site visits were followed by a review of learning objectives, reflection and questions.

Claire Colligan, employer engagement specialist at the Ministry of Education, said: “It has been wonderful to see local employers getting involved in the Applied Stream Work Placement Programme, which benefits not only students but also employers. The students hosted by Emrill gained real experience of the world of work and gained practical knowledge. In developing their skills, these students became more self-confident and will ultimately be more employable once they graduate. Emrill embraced this opportunity and provided a comprehensive programme that seeks to close the skills gap of the UAE economy, empower students and provide a skilled local workforce through Emiratisation. Emrill exceeded our expectations and is being showcased throughout the Ministry as an excellent example of work placement.”

The programme concluded with a closing ceremony, attended by students, their families, a representative from the Ministry of Education and Emrill staff, held at Emrill’s knowledge theatre in Dubai.
