Jebel Ali Port welcomed the biggest sugar carrier in the world, carrying 106 thousand tons of sugar imported from Brazil by Dubai’s Al Khaleej Sugar Refinery, the world’s largest stand-alone refinery.
Welcoming the world’s biggest sugar carrier at Jebel Ali Port were Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Chairman of DP World and Chairman of Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation, in presence of Jamal Al Ghurair, Managing Director of Al Khaleej Sugar Co. (LLC), along with a host of DP World officials.
Bin Sulayem said: “Our flagship Jebel Ali Port has become a destination for some of the world’s most important and largest bulk carriers. This reflects the global standing of Dubai as a regional and international trading and business hub, which is further strengthened by colossal industrial projects, such as Al Khaleej Sugar Refinery. The cutting-edge port facilities in Dubai, led by Jebel Ali Port- the world’s largest man-made harbour, joined with top customs facilitations and services offered in the emirate and the attractive features tailored by JAFZA and other free zones for traders and investors, have contributed to Dubai’s prestigious foothold on the global trade landscape.” “Guided by the farsighted vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, on the importance of upgrading Dubai’s port industry to accommodate a larger volume of trade, DP World is increasing the handling capacity of Jebel Ali Port and other ports in the emirate. Jebel Ali Port now serves a huge variety of customers from around the globe, all to the same extremely high standard. The expansion of Jebel Ali Port, currently taking place, through establishing Container Terminal 3, adds 4 million TEU capacity to the Port, taking its total handling capacity to 19 million TEU,” he added.
The Chairman of DP World further noted that Jebel Ali Port’s Container Terminal 3 has a modern infrastructure, featuring 19 quay cranes installed alongside a 1,860 metre long and 18 metre deep quayside that can handle 10 of the world’s largest container vessels simultaneously. The 19 quay cranes are remotely operated from a sophisticated control room off the quayside, in safety and comfort, largely by Emirati nationals, including females, who will also make up the majority of the 50 Automated Rail Mounted Gantry crane (ARMG) operations team.
In the first nine months of 2014, Dubai’s sugar trade amounted to AED4.2bn, recording 2.53 million tons of sugar. Sugar imports to Dubai reached AED2.8bn, while exports valued at AED1.16bn and re-exports at AED278.7m. For 2013, Dubai’s sugar trade scored AED6bn (3.2 million tons of sugar), of which AED3.42bn are imports, AED1.97bn are exports and AED564m are re-exports.
Jebel Ali Port features world-class facilities for handling food products, such as sugar, rice and flour. It incorporates latest technologies for unloading these products and ensuring they reach consumers at highest quality, in coordination with government authorities concerned with foodstuff trading.
