The Oranisation of Islamic Cooperation Standing Committee for Economic and Trade Cooperation (COMCEC) ended its talks on Friday with representatives of 57 nations present.
The two-day talks discussed COMCEC’s new strategy, based on several principles, namely on the freedom of movement, enhancing coordination, raising governance, and focusing efforts on cooperation in trade, transport, telecommunications, tourism, agriculture, funding and easing the extent of poverty.
The talks paid special significance to economic and trade affairs of mutual importance to member states – in light of global developments – like expanding bi-trade, enhancing the private sector’s role in this cooperation and developing transport and telecommunication means.
The talks’ communique said that developing a sustainable and competitive tourism sector was also an importantly discussed matter, along with the issues of tackling poverty, expanding financial cooperation and exchanging viewpoints on the role of public-private sector partnerships in the developing this sector.
Jerusalem was chosen as the capital of Islamic tourism for 2015, while the Turkish city of Konya, in the southwest, was chosen for 2016.
Attending nations called on the need to increase commercial funding activities, particularly those related to the International Islamic Trade Finance Corporation and between member nations, and to develop the programme related to vocational education and training and food security.
Additionally, they underlined the importance of contributions from all OIC member nations in the adoption of their 10-point working plan, which aims to increase economic and commercial cooperation.
