New Network Majlis season kicks off with session on crowdfunding

The Dubai Business Women Council (DBWC), the official representative organisation for business women, both professionals and entrepreneurs, in the Emirate of Dubai, kicked off the new season of its Network Majlis with an event at the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry under the theme, “Crowdfunding”. The session was hosted by Maurice Tanas, Co-Founder of AFKARMENA.

“We start the new Network Majlis season with a topic that is extremely relevant to today’s business world,” said Mrs. Raja Al Gurg, President of DBWC. “Especially for entrepreneurs and new businesses, crowdfunding has become a new way to source the funds required to feed its financial needs and is fast being recognised in Dubai as a feasible and trustworthy solution. Understanding crowdfunding will give our members the motivation to pursue their business ventures and endeavor entrepreneurial opportunities with the help of experts.” Crowdfunding is a simple but transformative concept where an entrepreneur proposes a business on a crowdfunding website. Through these websites, multiple individuals can commit relatively small amounts of capital to support the idea. Taken together, these contributions are often enough to propel the project from the idea stage to commercial reality.

DBWC members obtained valuable insight on the history of crowdfunding and its effect on the finance world after the financial crisis, while different types of crowdfunding were discussed in detail. AFKARMENA also touched on the benefits of crowdfunding for SMEs and entrepreneurs, along with tips on how to setup and launch a successful and prosperous business idea or one-off project through an online crowdfunding platform.

“Crowdfunding is a concept that has been around for a very, very long time. However, the current state of crowdfunding emerged in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis in response to the difficulties faced by early-stage enterprises in generating funds. In less than a decade, crowdfunding has spread like wild fire across the western world, and is now attracting considerable interest in developing countries. Crowdfunding has allowed entrepreneurs and SMEs to verify their ideas and businesses by enabling the community to support them,” said Maurice Tanas, Co-Founder, AFKARMENA.

“AFKARMENA is a reward-based crowdfunding online platform for the MENA region funded by the world. We strive to support the creation and growth of creative projects and innovation through educating project owners and backers. The company aims to establish “The New Age of Creativity” through the provision of a connective platform, building a supportive community, and an alternative-funding source that helps preserve the idea generators’ identities and ownership of their ideas.” Information about the Monthly Network Majlis events, the DBWC, and details on how to become a member, can be found on their official website.
